index2The wheels on Houston’s Food Trucks are moving and they are congregating at the Houston Community College Southwest Campus at West Loop South (off 610 near 59) this Saturday and Sunday for the Haute Wheels Food Truck Festival. libationsFor $18, you can taste bites and meals from over 30 food trucks including classic favorites The Waffle Bus, Bernie’s Burgers, Frosty Betty, Chi’lantro and many, many more! Also on board are 6 of Houston’s finest bands with sounds ranging from indie-pop to folk to a 5-piece rock band.

I had the chance to catch up with the leading man behind The Wheel Workers, Steven Higginbotham, as well as Craig Kinsey to get their thoughts on his inspiration, music, the festival and life. Here’s what they had to say:

Lauren Ignited: What are the biggest influences to your poppy-indie sound?
Wheel Workers: It’s a combination of influences from classic rock like the Beatles, Pink Floyd; 90s rock like REM, Nirvana, Pixies, and more recent indie rock from bands like Wye Oak, Arcade Fire, and so on.  So much great music out there.

Craig Kinsey: Current inspiration is old Motown and Rolling Stones.

LI: What projects are you currently working on?
CK: I’m in the middle of recording an epic Civil War ballad called Gettysburg. It’s over 14 minutes long

WW: We’re still in the middle of promoting our most recent album, Past to Present, which we just put out on ZenHill Records.  It was produced by Dan Workman, was about 3 years in the making, and we’re very proud of it. We are also moving forward on several music videos, both conceptual and live performance.  And I’ve just begun the process of working on material for the 3rd album.  It’s still in the very early stages, but we’ve got some good stuff coming together.

LI: Which food truck have you never tried that you are looking forward to sampling?
WW: I’ve never tried Monster PBJ.  They seem to have some cool options.  Basically any truck that has a vegan option is cool with me.
CK: I am going to walk around and see what strikes me. Something with humus. 

LI: If you had a food truck, what would you call it? What kind of food would it be?
WW: Hmm…..not sure…. Rabbit Food?  vegan mexican food.
CK: I would call my food truck Balls. I would serve food only in ball shapes.

LI: Are you feeling the urge to travel? If so, where to?
CK: I am planning to tour this year. The goal is to end up in Yellowstone National Park.

LI: If you ever moved from Houston, what city would you move to?
WW: Portland or Austin.  I want to live in Portlandia.

I have to agree with Steven about Portlandia. I would love to live there, as long as I get to be Fred and Carrie’s roommate. Pretty fun and clever answers from both Steven and Craig. Be sure to catch their sets this weekend at the fest!
