A Look Back at 2013
As many of us are realizing, when you stop for a moment and look back at what you’ve accomplished over the past 12 months, it can be quite astonishing. “Really!? I did all that?!” When I look back at 2013, I see a year of travel, love, humbling interviews, adventure, new experiences, memories with great friends and new memories with new friends. I’m thankful for everyone that has touched my life this year, and I can only hope that I’ve made a positive impression on at least a few of y’alls lives. Much love to all. Let’s take a look back, shall we?
I ended up in a music video for one of my favorite artists: Mayer Hawthorne. The song, “Reach Out Richard” is written from Mayer to his dad. In a music commentary for the Where Does This Door Go album, he said this song was almost too difficult to release. It’s touching and I def teared up a little listening to it. The video was shot with a ton of GoPro cameras; mostly the ones in a circle around Mayer. Love it.
I met and interviewed Grammy award winner Sergio Mendes, and hung out backstage with his emcee, H2O. From the greenroom, there is a tv that shows a live feed of the stage. About halfway through the show, there was a hilarious moment where H2O darted out of the green room so fast that his glasses flew off and he almost knocked stuff over on his way out. But, milliseconds later, he popped up on the tv. Turns out the set list had changed and he realized it only be hearing the intro to the song. Best part?! He walked on to that stage like nothing happened. Like everything was alright. Like a PRO.

I met and traveled coast to coast with Bob Marley’s legendary Wailers Band to New York, Louisiana, Arizona and California. I interviewed singer Yvad, as well as the front line Danglin, Chizzy and Cegee. And they introduced me to another band of legends: Steel Pulse. So, I got the chance to chat with Selwyn Brown, C# and David Hinds.
I went to SXSW Interactive for the first time and helped generate an influx of tweets by live tweeting the HATCH Pitch competition during the conference and met Reggie Watts and DJ Shadow.
I embraced the newness of Google+ and held Google Hangout interviews with Yoni Wolf and El Ten Eleven. High fives to these dudes for working through the quirks of me learning how to do these!
I interviewed BBOY North American finalist Jeremy HaviKORO and Free Press Summer Fest bands The Octopus Project, Wheeler Brothers, Buxton and Nick Greer & the Gs. I helped Heyward Howkins and DJ Sun spread the word about their new (and fantastic) albums. I dressed up as Marilyn Monroe, raced an armadillo and ended up in 002 Magazine! Um..thank you is an understatement, Fresh Arts Ball n’ Chain Gala! 🙂
My sister and I ventured to NYC. We were treated to tickets to the Kelly & Michael show, saw my good buddy Greg Cote on stage in Hit Lit, saw Quest Love perform at the Brooklyn Bowl, sat on the stairs at the Met (xoxo), and grabbed DELICIOUS coffee from Grumpy’s (where Hannah works, of course).
And probably the best thing of all. The moment where I got to meet the cat the whole word loves ….was featured on Buzzfeed.
It’s been a really great year and I have a lot of people to thank for helping me create lasting memories like these. I appreciate the time that bands donate to participate in my interviews, the friends that show up at concerts with me, the friends and family that support my blog and crazy, busy lifestyle and so much more. I had a great 2013 and can’t wait to see what happens in 2014. #letsdothis
