Pick Three: Sisters Folk Festival, September 6-9th, 2016

Starting one week after Labor Day, this festival has its roots firmly planted in the area and has gained traction every year since 1995. It is held in Sisters, Oregon. The locale is beautiful! Embraced by the foothills of the Cascade Mountains and the Three Sisters Wilderness Area, the festival spreads itself out over nine different stages, giving an individual character to every performance. With mountains, rivers, lakes, and a smorgasbord of “Little Curiosity” shops to explore, you will not run out of things to do here, and might consider arriving early or planning to stay a few more days afterward to fully appreciate the area itself.

Sisters Folk FestivalMany great Folk Artists have passed through during this 21-year lineage, and my personal attraction to the event is derived from a feature that I have never come across anywhere else. Each year as the festival approaches, many of the Artists performing arrive early to facilitate a two-week “Song Academy” and music camp for the local kids. Partnering with the Sisters School District, the festival creates a space for young musicians to learn from seasoned professionals. From songwriting workshops to performance and singing lessons, these Artists give of their time and share their knowledge with the areas next generation of folk artists before the show even begins!

“Song Academy” instructors from the festival roster this year are, Shawn Mullins, Laurie Lewis and Tom Rozum, Sarah Siskind, The Small Glories, Peter Mulvie, Chuck Prophet, (my personal favorite), The Good Time Travellers, Dennis McGregor, and many more.
