Noah’s Kitchen, founded by mother-son duo Amber and Noah Rodriguez, is a 501(3) c non-profit that serves food to the Houston homeless by preparing and hand delivering meals. This year their 2nd Annual Chili Cookoff was held at Hughes Hangar (formerly Washington Grill) on April 30th, 2011.  When Amber asked me to be a Judge, I said yes immediately! I was (and still am!) very honored and humbled to have the opportunity to be a part of such a wonderful organization that works each week to help provide food to those in need. The party was well in progress when I arrived and each Chili Cookoff team booth was full of friendly cooks and on-lookers who were as interested as I to hear the story behind the chili. Cookoff teams were encouraged to decorate their booths and they sure did! Many teams came dressed in matching T-shirts, nearly every booth was decorated to match their team name and every team was extremely enthusiastic to be a part of the Cookoff. As a talented list of band after band took stage, guests chatted, bid in the silent auction, danced and tasted chili after chili. When it came time for the judging, I was beyond excited! There were 8 Chili Cookoff teams in the running and we were given full cups of each to try and judging was based off of a 10 point scale on Aroma, Consistency, Color, Taste, and After-Taste. At the end of day, it was a tight race between The Holy Cowboys and The Kung Fu Cafe but The Holy Cowboys walked away with the First Place Trophy! I can’t wait for the 3rd Annual Noah’s Kitchen Chili Cookoff and I hope to see you there!
